Because it is widely used for small and lightweight items, it can mean a small box, and when used together with outer boxes such as carton boxes or rigid boxes, it can also refer to an inner box. Among box types, folding boxes are relatively affordable and offer the best workability for printing and finishing.

Folding boxes are used across many industries, including pharmaceutical boxes for drug companies, cosmetic boxes for the beauty industry, and snack boxes for food companies.

Types of Folding Boxes

Folding boxes come in three bottom structures: tuck-end, crash-lock bottom, and three-side seal. The type is selected based on the product’s weight and characteristics.

Tuck-End Folding Box

As the name suggests, a tuck-end folding box is a basic box with the top and bottom designed in the same tuck style. It is often used for cosmetics such as lipsticks and nail products, or for other lightweight items. However, because the lid can open, it is often secured with stickers or other closures during packaging.

Crash-Lock Bottom Folding Box

A crash-lock bottom folding box is structured so the bottom can be assembled into a cross shape, making it sturdier than a tuck-end box. Since it opens only from the top, with the bottom already assembled, it is also called a top-opening single-side box. It is often used for products that are heavier than tuck-end box items, such as stationery and nutritional supplements.

Three-Side Seal Folding Box

Drawing of a three-side seal product box

A three-side seal folding box has both the side panels and the bottom glued, allowing it to hold heavier products than other folding boxes of the same size. Like the crash-lock bottom box, it opens from one side with the top serving as the lid. It can be used for heavier or safety-sensitive products such as skin lotion, diffusers, and tumblers. Because it is mostly pre-assembled, it is simple to use and efficient for fast packing work.

However, a three-side seal folding box cannot be used when the box area is too small. If the length or width is less than 3 cm, a tuck-end or crash-lock bottom folding box should be made instead. For this reason, small products such as tints are often packed in tuck-end boxes.
