What Are the Different Types of Packaging Finishing? (Foil, Embossing, Epoxy, Coating...)

Hello, this is Packative.

Are you looking to create a more distinctive and special package rather than a standard printed one? If so, please take a close look at this post.👀

The shine, coating, and raised effects we see on packaging surfaces in everyday life are called 'finishing.'

Let's explore what kinds of finishing types and methods are available through these terms.👇

Foil : A method of applying foil in various colors to paper using heat

'Foil' is named according to the color of the foil film, such as gold foil, silver foil, black foil, white foil, red foil, green foil, blue foil, and hologram foil. It is often used as a point-finishing technique when you want to create a luxurious and sophisticated feel.

Foil, which is used when you want to give a luxurious and elegant impression, can create a variety of packaging looks depending on the color you choose.

⚙️ Embossing: A method of pressing paper with heat using a brass or zinc plate

Embossing is divided into 'Debossing' and 'Embossing' depending on how the heat-and-press process is applied.

Debossing, also called intaglio or recessed embossing, is characterized by a sunken feel when you touch the surface.

It can be used as a point detail either together with foil or on its own.

Embossing, also called relief or raised embossing, is characterized by a raised feel when you touch the surface.

Try using embossing as a standalone finish on eco-friendly paper materials. With no need for waste disposal, you'll have a perfect and trendy eco-friendly package.

🪨 Coating: A method of applying a film to the surface of printed materials to protect it and improve durability and stability

Coating is broadly divided into glossy coating and matte coating.

Glossy coating creates a reflective, sparkling effect, while matte coating helps bring out the box's own color more clearly.

If you want to highlight only certain areas for a more special effect, try spot UV coating.

Also called epoxy, this finishing method is sometimes used together with embossing on areas you want to emphasize even more.

Depending on how you combine finishing methods, you can create packaging with very different looks and feels. However, using too many finishing techniques indiscriminately only wastes unnecessary cost!
