Corrugated board, one of the most representative packaging materials, is lightweight yet durable, which is why it’s commonly used for shipping boxes. It helps pack and deliver products more safely without adding much to the weight that directly affects shipping costs, making it a popular choice. However, when requesting box production, you may often hear that the manufacturing time for corrugated boxes is longer than for paper boxes. Why is that?

Why Corrugated Box Production Takes Longer

What Is Corrugated Board?

First, to make a corrugated box, you need corrugated board. Let’s look at what corrugated board is and how it’s made. Corrugated board refers to paperboard made by attaching a wavy, fluted sheet of paper. Unlike thin paper, corrugated board already requires a manufacturing process to make the board itself. One reason corrugated box production takes longer is that making the corrugated board itself takes time.

How Corrugated Board Is Produced

For double-wall corrugated board, three rolls of liner and medium are needed; for single-wall corrugated board, two rolls are required. Corrugated rolls are large rolls of corrugated board wound up like toilet paper. As they pass through the machine, multiple rolls are bonded together to create double-wall or single-wall corrugated board.

The production process for corrugated boxes begins by loading the corrugated board into the machine and preparing it for production, then printing according to the customer’s design. Once printing is complete, the top and bottom flap sections of the box are cut so the box can be assembled properly. Then, by using strong adhesive, the box is joined together to create the corrugated box we know. Since corrugated boxes are made from a thicker, heavier, and more durable material than ordinary paper boxes, they generally take longer to produce. At Packative, paper boxes can typically be produced in about 7–10 business days, but corrugated boxes can sometimes take nearly three weeks depending on the order.

Lightweight

One reason corrugated boxes are used despite taking longer to produce than paper boxes is their light weight. Corrugated boxes can safely package and ship contents together with cushioning materials for delivery. Because the corrugated material itself provides cushioning while remaining relatively light, it is widely used.

Safety

Because corrugated board is made by bonding several layers of paper together, its strength and durability are much greater than ordinary paper. In addition, the fibers in board are longer and more densely packed than paper fibers, making it even more resistant to tearing and stronger overall. The fluted layer increases structural strength and resistance to compression, making corrugated board ideal for packaging heavy items or products that need to be stacked during shipping. Its safety is what makes this material so widely recognized.
